You can choose buildings cover, contents cover or a combined policy, with standard and Platinum options available - privilege offers discounts when insuring multiple cars at the same address.
Privilege policies are underwritten by U K Insurance Limited. According to the FCA data, it accepted 70-75[2]% of buildings claims and 70-75%[2] of contents claims during 2024.
Policy Expert's highest-tier contents and buildings policies (Home Insurance Platinum) receive a four-star Defaqto rating for features and benefits, while its standard buildings and contents policies receive three stars. Defaqto is a leading independent reviewer of financial products.
Yes, Privilege offers standalone contents insurance or combined buildings and contents cover, with Standard and Platinum policies available. Standard policies let you choose between £50,000 and £175,000 of contents cover, including new-for-old replacements, stolen-key cover, unlimited frozen food cover and up to £500 for belongings kept outside within your property.
Platinum includes wider protection, such as accidental damage, family legal protection, home emergency cover and higher limits for belongings outside the home. You can also add personal possessions cover for items taken away from home, including phones, bicycles and money.

Privilege Platinum includes everything provided by its standard Home Insurance policy, alongside several enhanced benefits. For contents insurance, these include accidental damage, family legal protection worth up to £100,000 and home emergency cover worth up to £500 per claim.
Platinum also increases several contents limits. Belongings kept within the boundaries of your property are covered up to £2,500, while personal possessions cover is included for items taken outside the home - individual items can be covered up to £4,000, bicycles up to £1,000 and money up to £500.
Buildings customers receive accidental damage cover, legal protection and home emergency insurance too. Platinum also provides up to £5,000 to locate and access the source of a water or oil leak, and can replace an entire matching bathroom or kitchen suite when a damaged part can’t be matched.
Privilege Platinum could be worth considering when you would otherwise pay separately for accidental damage, legal protection, home emergency and personal possessions cover. It may be particularly useful when you regularly take valuable belongings outside your home, as Platinum includes personal possessions cover and provides higher limits for individual items, bicycles and cash. Homeowners with matching kitchens or bathroom suites may also value the additional protection if one damaged part can’t be replaced.
However, Platinum won’t necessarily be the best-value choice for every household. Compare the difference in premium with the cost of adding only the protection you need, and check the excesses, exclusions and item limits carefully - the standard policy may be enough if you have lower-value belongings and don’t need extensive accidental damage or away-from-home cover.
Which home insurer is best for you will depend on your own needs and circumstances. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of Privilege home insurance to help you make your decision:
Platinum contents cover received a Which? Best Buy rating with a contents policy score of 73%[5], placing it within the top 40% of policies assessed
U K Insurance accepted 75-80%[2] of combined home claims in 2024, while buildings-only and contents-only acceptance rates were both 70-75[2]
Full accidental damage, personal possessions, family legal protection and home emergency cover are included as standard with the Platinum policy
Platinum includes a £4,000 single-item limit, £1,000 bicycle cover and protection for belongings during trips of up to 60 days abroad
Cover for subsidence, burst pipes, underground services and lost or stolen keys is included as standard
Which? gave the standard contents policy a score of 52%[6], placing it last among the 35 policies assessed.
There is a £1,000 trace-and-access limit and only £25,000 of buildings alternative accommodation cover
There is also an escape-of-water excess of £550 on the Platinum policy
Privilege doesn’t offer a specific saving for buying both types of home insurance together.
Which? didn’t receive enough responses to give Privilege a customer or claims-handling score, despite being able to assess the policies themselves
Data below is for standard combined buildings and contents home insurance policies. Ratings and inclusions may be different for individual policy types and for higher-tier policies with more features and inclusions.

Alongside home insurance, Privilege offers a number of other insurance and money products:
Privilege home insurance is underwritten by U K Insurance Limited, which is also responsible for handling the policy and paying accepted claims.
Yes, Privilege allows customers to pay in instalments under a credit agreement, as well as paying the premium as a lump sum. Check your quote and credit agreement for the payment schedule and total amount repayable, as cancelling the Direct Debit alone won’t automatically cancel the insurance policy.
Yes, both Privilege Home Insurance and Platinum Home Insurance cover subsidence, heave and landslip. Outdoor features such as patios, drives, garden walls, gates, fences and hedges are only covered when the main home is damaged at the same time and by the same cause.
Normal settlement, newly made-up ground, coastal erosion and damage connected with structural alterations are excluded.
Home emergency cover is optional with the standard policy and included with Platinum. It provides up to £500 for each emergency callout, including labour and parts, and covers incidents involving heating failure, plumbing, drainage, electrics, security and pests.
If a boiler is beyond economic repair, Privilege contributes £250 towards a replacement, rather than paying the full cost. Underfloor, solar and warm-air heating, oil-fired or solid-fuel systems and boilers with an output above 70kW aren’t covered, while a 14-day waiting period usually applies when cover begins.
Personal possessions cover is optional with standard Home Insurance and included with Platinum when contents insurance is selected. Both provide cover in the UK and Republic of Ireland, plus overseas protection for trips lasting up to 60 days.
Standard cover has a £2,000 single-item limit, £500 per bicycle and £250 for money. Platinum raises these limits to £4,000 per item, £1,000 per bicycle and £500 for money, although higher-value belongings can usually be listed separately.
Yes, but the limits depend on your policy. Standard contents insurance provides up to £500 for belongings outside and £1,000 for theft from garages or outbuildings, while Platinum increases these limits to £2,500 and £5,000 respectively.
Platinum also includes up to £2,500 for garden plants, with a £500 limit for each plant. Garages and domestic outbuildings form part of the insured home, although storm or flood damage to fences, gates and hedges isn’t covered.
Privilege doesn’t publish one standard excess for every policy. Your home insurance details show the general property excess, alongside any separate excesses for subsidence, escape of water and flood claims.
Privilege normally deducts one excess for each claim, unless an endorsement in your policy states otherwise. Because the amounts are set when you receive a quote, check the policy details rather than assuming the excess will be the same as another customer’s.
